Funeral Directors always set the tone in their home. If you feel comfortable, your families will follow suit. Offer the services of a photographer to document any funeral, visitation or memorial. We photograph marriage, and births, so why avoid and forget about death. Death tends to be the biggest emotional event of our life.
When we get married or have babies we do not have a point of reference. We can reference an entire life. A funeral brings together a one time gathering of guests and relatives...never to be duplicated again. This could be the last picture of a grandmother and her grandson...Click away.
You need to find a photographer that is quiet. Not one that demands group pictures, rather one that quietly observes moments of opportunity to get candid shots. A good photographer is a silent photographer. A good photographer keeps his distance and is not obtrusive in any way. A good photographer knows how to hide in corners, crouch down low, and sneak in and out of view.
I have hired photographers to photograph funerals in the past. Yes, these are hard events to document. But the reward is great. The family will always be able to reflect upon the photographs in years to come. The pictures can be passed down through the generations.
p.s. Have some photographs of children and adults to show other families as a point of reference.
